My $4.00 CVS Trip

I went to CVS today to use up all my ECB's. I had about $25 worth. I am planning on a hiatas from all drugstore and/or non-food purchases for the month of June. I recently took inventory of all my household and toiletry items and could not beleive the amount of stuff I have. I made a several donations to flood victims and still have quite a bit.

Transaction #1
2 16-pack Charmin TP $9.99 ea
1 10-pack Duracell $5.99
Total: $25.97
- $4 off $20 Purchase CVS coupon (emailed when your card is registered on CVS.com)
- $20 Extra Care Bucks (from previous transactions and a CVS survey)
= $2.61 OOP + $10 ECBs earned from P&G promotion

Transaction #2
*note hit upon a great baby items clearance deal

2 CVS Antiseptic Mouthwash BOGO 50% off
2 Aveeno Baby Shampoo $1.42 clearance price
1 Huggies Baby Wash $.97 clearance price
4 Johnson Buddies soaps .34 ea clearance price
1 4-pk Pepsi (I thought this was .99 or I would not have bought it)
Total: $16.14
- $14.50 ECBs
= $1.40 OOP

Total OOP for the day: $4.01
Total Savings: $65.91

I happened to mention to the cashier that I was putting myself on a spending freeze for June. When I left, she said "so we won't see you for a while?" I said "yes, if all goes to plan". She smiled and said "But our sales are going to take a hit without you!" I laughed and thought, "yea, it's time for me to take a break...."

But I'm glad I bought all the baby soap and shampoo, for this is what I had waiting for me when I got home .....

My 5-year-old got into the stamp kit. The extra soap came in handy.

Why Do I Give?

Recently, when talking about the Nashville Floods and the great need in and around Nashville, I was asked "Tara, how can you give {to charities & individuals} when you are in such hard financial times?"
My simple answer is "How can I not?" My home and family were spared while families less than a mile from us lost everything: home, belongings, pets, everything. It could have easily been us and I'm not taking that point for granted.

Yes, we are in a tight financial situation right now. We are living on less than half the income we used to. But, we still have a roof over our head and food on the table. We are managing to survive during this tough time. Part of this survival is from my savvy coupon shopping and stockpiling. This stockpile has come in handy over the past week when it came time to help out my neighbors who lost everything.

In years past, when major tragedies happened (aka: Sept 11, Hurricane Katrina, etc) we were in a financial position to give hundreds of dollars to charities to help the victims. This time, when it happened in our own backyard ironically, we can not donate that kind of money. I thought I could probably scrounge up $10 or so and donate to the Red Cross or the Humane Association (where my heart is). But then I realized, I could give them $10 cash or I could take that same $10 and with my shopping savvy, buy and donate $50 or more of needed supplies. And between my $10 and the stockpile of food, cleaning supplies, and toiletries, that I already have: I was able to help a personal friend, several other families that I didn't know, and many dogs and cats at the animal shelters.

I also can give my time. There are lots of organizations needing volunteers. I already volunteer at the Nashville Humane Association and will continue working in the pet food pantry giving out food to families with pets who are in need. I also have been helping a personal friend with her loss.
I really believe that anything we give will come back to us 10 fold. I've already seen this happen in my life this week with a kind and very generous Mother's Day Gift.

But the most important reason I choose to give? Below are the images I passed on my way to my nice, comfortable, dry, beautiful home today:

There, but for the Grace of God, go I.

Weekly Shopping Wrap up

This week I did something a little different. I am moving toward trying to buy more organic, and local foods so I added the Farmer's Market to my shopping mix this week. My main focus for organic and all natural is meat and dairy. I've been purchasing free range eggs from a local farmer for a year now, and this week I added milk to my list. I purchased 3 gallons of milk from Hatcher Farm, a local dairy farm. Their milk is all natural and comes from cows who actually graze in a field and not forced to stand in a milk factory eating corn (which is not what cows are supposed to eat!)

Now, Hatcher milk is not cheap! I've been looking at it for a while, and pricing it in different stores and online. It averages $6 dollars a gallon! I'll let you pick yourself up off the floor.......
But, here's the deal I found: At the Franklin Farmer's market, if you purchase 3 gallons or more at a time, you can get it for $5 dollars a gallon. Still a huge difference from the average $2 a gallon a Kroger. But, I know exactly where this milk came from and feel confident about no hormones, antibiotics, etc in the milk my family is drinking. Now, my family cannot drink 3 gallons of milk before it goes bad. So I am freezing the extra for later. I've frozen milk before with no issue, you just have to pour off a little from the top of the jug so that the milk has room to expand when it freezes. I'm hoping this frugal experiment doesn't blow up in my face!

Total OOP: $22.50

I also shopped Whole Foods and purchased:
2lbs Organic Corn Meal from the bulk bins: .99/lb sale
1/2 lb Applegate Organic Herbed Turkey breast. $7.99/lb sale -- yes! that was a sale price!
** Note: it's expensive! But it is the best sliced turkey I've ever had!

Menu Plan Monday

Well, I took the weekend off from the blog, and now I'm having trouble getting back into it.

I try to plan my dinners to be $5 or less except when I use meat. It will cost more because I've made a commitment to only purchase organic and humanely raised meat. This causes it to be more expensive, but it's not a budget buster if you shop wisely. I try to limit my meat meals to once or twice a week max. Otherwise, I am able to keep my meals at $5 or less by shopping sales, using coupons and stockpiling items when I get them at their rock bottom price.

Monday -- Quick Bean Quesadillas

Tuesday -- Hash Brown Frittata

Wednesday -- Lentil Tacos (recipe to come later)

Thursday -- Simple Supper: Canned Veggies, mashed potatoes, crescent rolls

Friday -- Dance Class! Leftovers

Saturday -- Multiple birthday parties! Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup

Sunday -- Slow Cooker Pizza (recipe to come later)

Weekly Grocery Wrap Up - The Great Flood!

This week has been unlike anything I've ever experienced. We've been in our home since Saturday, unable to leave because of flood waters and washed out roads. I did finally venture out on Monday evening to survey the damage and grab some groceries. My budget is blown because of the extra water and other supplies we decided to get because of the flood and potential contaminated water supply (you can see some of our stockpile in the background of the picture).

I'm not going to bother to breakdown my purchases this week. The publix sale cycle ends today, to see my grocery list with coupon matches go here. We made a couple different trips at different times to the grocery and not all our purchases are in the picture.

Menu Plan Monday - Flood Edition

I've been so distracted by the Floods in Nashville that I've not spent very much time on the blog. I'm just now getting around to planning the menu for the week.

I usually try to keep my meals at $5 or less except when I have meat, which is usually not more than once a week. I've made a commitment to only purchasing organic and humanely raised meat. It can be done while on a tight budget! But, my meals usually end up being more than $5. Oh well, I think it's worth it for a healthy family

Monday -- Veggie Burritos

Tuesday -- Veggie Quesadillas

Wednesday -- Mom's Mini Meatloaves

Thursday -- Simple Supper: Canned beans, corn, mac n cheese

Friday -- Dance Class! Leftovers or soup from a can and sandwiches

Saturday - Hashbrown Frittata

Sunday -- Mother's Day - TBD

Nashville Flood

I have been living through the Great Flood of Middle Tennessee. We've received more rain in the past 2 days than any other time since they began recording rainfall. The entrance to our neighborhood has been under 4 feet of water and the road leading to our neighborhood has been washed away. We are very lucky and grateful that our house is on a hill and water has not gotten to it.

There are hundreds of families living in shelters right now and thousands more without power. Lots of damage to homes and businesses all over town.

Buy Some Stamps, Save an Animal!

The US Postal Service has some great new stamps! Right now you can purchase stamps that have pictures of shelter animals.

Every year millions of dogs and cats are euthanized because of overcrowding at animal shelters. Most of these animals would have made wonderful pets if only given the chance.

Also, as part of the campaign launch Halo Pet Foods are giving a million pet meals to animal shelters around the country.

Go here to order your pet stamps.
