Weekly Shopping Wrap up
This week I did something a little different. I am moving toward trying to buy more organic, and local foods so I added the Farmer's Market to my shopping mix this week. My main focus for organic and all natural is meat and dairy. I've been purchasing free range eggs from a local farmer for a year now, and this week I added milk to my list. I purchased 3 gallons of milk from Hatcher Farm, a local dairy farm. Their milk is all natural and comes from cows who actually graze in a field and not forced to stand in a milk factory eating corn (which is not what cows are supposed to eat!)
Now, Hatcher milk is not cheap! I've been looking at it for a while, and pricing it in different stores and online. It averages $6 dollars a gallon! I'll let you pick yourself up off the floor.......
But, here's the deal I found: At the Franklin Farmer's market, if you purchase 3 gallons or more at a time, you can get it for $5 dollars a gallon. Still a huge difference from the average $2 a gallon a Kroger. But, I know exactly where this milk came from and feel confident about no hormones, antibiotics, etc in the milk my family is drinking. Now, my family cannot drink 3 gallons of milk before it goes bad. So I am freezing the extra for later. I've frozen milk before with no issue, you just have to pour off a little from the top of the jug so that the milk has room to expand when it freezes. I'm hoping this frugal experiment doesn't blow up in my face!
Total OOP: $22.50
I also shopped Whole Foods and purchased:
2lbs Organic Corn Meal from the bulk bins: .99/lb sale
1/2 lb Applegate Organic Herbed Turkey breast. $7.99/lb sale -- yes! that was a sale price!
** Note: it's expensive! But it is the best sliced turkey I've ever had!
Total OOP: $6.35

Hatcher is our favorite milk. It tastes incredible. We buy it occasionally. It's on my list to switch to. However, since our family drinks 3 gallons a week I haven't worked it into our budget just yet. Have you all done Hatcher tour?
Heading to the market this weekend for milk, veggies and our first order of grass fed, humanely raised meat.
